The Brave Procession

Our lives
can be so hard --
terrifyingly fragile,
unspeakably profound,
minuscule
(thankfully)
beyond our imagining;

replete
with challenges,
problems and puzzles,
fascinating,
scary as hell,
and ultimately,
insurmountable.

There lies the sonnet,
the tragedy,
and the song.

For this knowledge,
recognition
that in the end we must
all fail,
we must
all say good-bye,
defines the poem of our existence.

The beauty dwells not
in how we strive to change
this,
but in how we live
anyway,
live knowing
that we cannot change
this,
in how we conduct ourselves
knowing
that our conduct is ultimately nothing,
that our conduct will be ultimately
forgotten,

in how we dare to love,

in how we dare simply
to proceed.
